10 Steps to Happiness: Step One- How To Feel Good About Yourself

Feel good about yourself!

To feel good about yourself is also known as having good self-worth. If you have good self-worth, you are much more likely to be successful and have close, satisfying relationships.

How to feel good about yourself is based on the how your parents feel about you, your friends, teachers you have had, bosses, coworkers, and the experiences during your life. When you feel good about YOU, you attract “goodness” – the people around you, the good jobs, the good opportunities. I call these the “goodies”.

So… if you are not lucky enough to be blessed with positive self-esteem,  don’t fret, all is not lost.

How to feel good about yourself is an important part of the 10 steps to happiness …

There are a number of things you can do to greatly improve your feeling of self-worth so you can get the goodies.

Here are 10 self-esteem boosters:

#1  Shift your thinking about yourself.

Every time you think, “I don’t deserve … change your thinking to “I do deserve that”.

Every time you make a mistake and think “I am so embarrassed or ashamed” change your thinking to, “Move on, I can’t change the past. I’ll do better the next time” and try to laugh it off.

The more you do this, the more you retrain your brain toward positive thoughts.

#2 Look in the mirror and say positive things to yourself.

Louise Hays who wrote, “You Can Heal Your Life” says this is a VERY powerful technique. Have you ever seen the famous picture of the kitten looking in the mirror and there is a lion staring back at him. I love that!

(If you think of the song- “I’m sexy and I know it!”- that will make me laugh- one of the boys in my daughter’s middle school told me it a self-esteem song for boys!! (LOL).

#3 Make good choices.  

If you are trying to lose weight, don’t eat that extra piece of candy. If you have decided to start exercising regularly , don’t make excuses why you can’t work-out today. Go work-out and you will get the GOODIES- that good feeling about YOU.

#4 Think of 5 good things you have done lately.

Maybe you met a deadline at work, complimented your spouse, offered helpful advice to a friend.

#5 Set 3 realistic goals for yourself this week and reach them.

Show yourself you can stick to a plan- that you are worthwhile enough.

#6 Make a list of 4 things you are good at.

Are you a good person, a good friend, a good employee? Are you responsible, loyal, fun, musical, a good cook, handy fixing things, a good tennis player?

#7 Forgive yourself for your latest mistake. 

All of us make plenty of mistakes. Forgive yourself and move on. This s SO important. Don’t waste your energy looking back.

#8 Learn to be for own cheerleader. 

Encourage yourself to be the best you can be. When you catch yourself being self-critical, be complimentary instead . NURTURE  and support yourself. Say to yourself, “I can do it.  I don’t expect to be perfect.. I am just learni
ng..” Then pat yourself on the back (can you reach back there?)

#9 Fill in the blank I can learn to shine in ….

Every one as their strengths. Think of what you excel in and make that area part of your life- maybe it is your work or it can be your hobby.

#10 Have a great sense of humor.

Humor gets me through just about all my faux pas in life. Learn to make fun of yourself- in a light way- but not self- deprecating. I do a lot of “OOPS” and laugh hard (you know- the Rick Perry move form Saturday Night Live).

Remember, step one to happiness is feeling good about yourself. Positive self-worth leads to many parts of your life falling into place. It’s easier to take chances, let mistakes roll off, have close friends, and work success.

You deserve to be happy and have a great life. You deserve the goodies! You have the power to change and feel good about YOU! Learning to be happy starts with being happy with yourself. How to feel good about yourself is something you should master as part of your personal development.
