How to stay motivated is important to our personal development.
Do you make excuses sometimes when you don’t feel like doing something like…
“It’s too hard”
” I’m too busy with…”
“I’m tired”
“It won’t fit into my schedule”.
You start seeing positive changes when you make a specific change a priority. You start exercising when you get a health problem or start dieting if a high school reunion is coming up. If you drink and use drugs, it may taking losing your family or your job to increase your motivation to actually give up drugs and alcohol.
It seems to be human nature to be lazy about positive changes without having a clear reward at the other end- feeling happier, becoming more popular, making more money, being in better health, or having more sex. No more making excuses! Listen to the excuses in this video… and watch this ALL the way to the end I promise it will be worth it!).
Our society promotes instant gratification- fast food, instant information through the web, instant dates online etc.. Why- we don’t even have to go to a bookstore to get the next book we want to read. Everything seems to be right at our fingertips…
So what’s the answer to stop making excuses and getting off out butts to make positive changes? It all boils down to self-discipline and a willingness to put in effort to make a change. Self -discipline is a very important part of personal development and is key to staying motivated. It is a willingness to put in the hard work necessary to reach your goal- whatever your goal is.
Self-discipline is also a self-esteem booster. For every action step you take you will good about yourself. If you are not already self-disciplined, can you learn? Absolutely!
Start with defining the top 1-2 goals that are important to you and make an action plan to accomplish them. Start with small steps. Each day, follow your to-do list to get you closer to your goal.
For example, if you want to start exercising, but you are out of condition, you may want to start with only 5 or 10 minutes a day and build up over a month to longer times periods. Before you know it, you are doing 30 minutes 4-5 times a week. Guess what? You have developed a new habit and therefore carrying it out becomes easier every time!
So the secret to “how to stay motivated” is to be consistent with your efforts.
This is how all positive changes take place. This is how you put yourself in the driver’s seat of your own life. Do you want to feel happier? Yes? Then no excuses! I know you can do it!

One of my biggest excuses for not trying new things that I am interested in is fear of what others will think. I am still a little bit scared when I try something new, but the more I do it, the more I realize, no one is really looking at how I am doing. They are all much more interested in their own experience. The rewards of getting out there, being with people, and having fun are what keep me motivated to “just do it”, when that little voice in my head is making excuses. I just keep remembering the rewards will outweigh the discomfort and that I can do it! The more I practice this, the easier it is getting.
Thanks for another great article, Dr. Uhr.
