10 Steps To Happiness: Step Seven-Take Action

Take Action!

Take action on things you have been whining about- whether it is your weight, your job, your marriage…Go from feeling victimized to taking charge. How?

MAKE A DECISION TO CHANGE!

How can you be successful?

Take action on this decision EVERY DAY in some way.

Most people think about what they would like to change, but taking action on it seems to require too much motivation or work.  All of us lapse into bad habits like eating too much junk food, not exercising, complaining about someone or something…

Based on helping patients over the years, here are 4 keys to success:

#1 Make a decision on what you want to change.

#2 Set specific goals on what you will DO to change it.

#3 Visualize the end result (often) of what the change will be like

#4 Be persistent.

Sound easy? Can you guess the hard part of this formula? …….. being persistent!! That is one of the MOST important keys to success.

Here a case from my practice.

AT is a 35 year old woman I treat who is married with 3 kids. Over the course of their marriage, she gained 50 lbs and her husband lost his attraction to her. He treated her  more like a roommate than a wife. She complained about him a lot, but was not willing to look at her contribution to a failing marriage. It took someone outside the marriage, that she liked and respected (not an affair), to comment on her weight/self-esteem that sprung her into action.

SHE made the DECISION to change her weight. She exercised, cooked healthy meals, got rid of the treats in her house, and she slimmed down. The most significant change she made was not her weight, though. She made a decision to focus on herself and improve. She quit focusing on changing her husband’s flaws. Her marriage is better, mainly because she is happier and her self-esteem has improved.

Most big changes occur with a decision. YOU decide your dream is worth going for…that is what personal development is all about.

Therapy can often help get you overcome obstacles (including past trauma)that can get in the way of change. Other times, it is a relationship or a life circumstance that prompts a decision to be an action taker  (it may be losing a job, a spouse, or a health scare) that triggers this decision.

Remember, when you make a change, don’t be a perfectionist or a harsh judge of yourself. Keep moving forward, not back. Every time I personally make a big change, here is what I say to myself, “Put one foot in front of the other”. I say this over and over. It is one of my mantras. Even if my progress seems too slow at times- at least it is the right direction- FORWARD!

Now go take action!
