The Power of Positive Thinking!
This week I learned the ”the power of positive thinking ” from one of my patients.
So many people whine and complain about their circumstances. The root of their unhappiness is often that they have lost perspective of how lucky they truly are even though they view their life as unlucky. They have lost the perspective of gratitude for what they have. They are not looking for the silver lining.
Here is this amazing lesson I learned about looking for the silver lining…
AZ is in his 60’s. He and his wife have a child with cerebral palsy (cerebral palsy is a disorder where the part of brain involved with movement is damaged). Their “child” is now 32. She can’t speak, walk, write, go to the bathroom by herself, or stand etc. Occasionally, she has seizures. Their life with a special needs child requires challenges way beyond normal parenting.
Everyday, they have to use a lift to get her into the shower, help her with her bathroom needs, put her in a wheelchair. They communicate with her through her computer.
Here is what the Dad said to me, “Some people see us as unlucky to have a daughter with cerebral palsy, but I look at it this way… I will never lose my daughter. She is wonderful and we are the lucky ones.”
I thought that was incredibly beautiful.
I have always been a big believer in choosing your own attitude in life. He could have chosen to be resentful and bitter about his circumstances. Instead, he has chosen to feel fortunate and look at his situation in a positive light.
The next time I feel like complaining about anything, I am going to think of this story and change my thinking. Altering your perspective to find the silver lining is one of the keys on how to be happy. That is the basis of personal development.
“When one door closes another one opens; but we so often look so long regretfully on the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.” – Alexander Graham Bell
