I’m Dr. Sarita Uhr, a Stanford-trained psychiatrist with over 24 years of experience treating all types of disorders.
Almost all mental health disorders are either triggered or made worse by stress.
Stress increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious diseases.
Stress that is not addressed causes anxiety and depression.
Sometimes medication is required to get the symptoms of anxiety or depression under control.
S.H.. was a 35 year old professional with 3 young children who came to me because he was almost paralyzed with fear that he would lose his business. Previously, he had been quite successful. As his business slowed down, he started to have trouble sleeping, was consumed with worry, and was quick to snap at his wife and kids. He told me one day he would get so anxious sometimes that he would throw up. He also was drinking too much alcohol after work in an effort to calm himself and this had gotten out of control .
First, I withdrew him from alcohol using medication. He started therapy and we focused on his fear of failure. He was able to think more clearly off alcohol and was able to formulate some strategies to save his business. He reached out to some other entrepreneurs who met as a group regularly. He was able to get support from this peer group.
I shared with him some ways to handle stress which involved making some changes in how he approached his business. For example, he had to give up his tendency to be a perfectionist as well as learn to communicate better with his staff. He started to take positive steps toward reviving his business. He realized he couldn’t hang on to his “old ways” to cope anymore. The new “S.H.” was happier, more confident, and much more relaxed.
